If a guest accidentally breaks something in your house, is it alright to ask him to pay for it? My friend broke an expensive vase during a party she attended, and the host insists that she pays for it. Should she?

If the host asked for it, then she should probably just pay to avoid conflict. However, if I were the host, I would never ask my guests to pay for something they broke.

what a strange idea! Unless of course the person in question went hay wire and tried breaking everything,: in that case i'd call for a doctor or the cops

The host of the party your friend went to should never throw another party again! If the vase was so expensive, she should have placed it somewhere safer.
