In a wedding reception, when do you do the speeches - before or after the meal? I notice that most of the guests do not listen to after-meal speeches anymore. They are either outside having a cigarette or chatting. However, if I put the speeches before the meal, I'm afraid the guests will go hungry. Is there any rule or good practice on timing speeches?
Traditional etiquette is that the speeches are to occur after the meal has been served and before dancing, if included. The father’s bride (or family representative) is to make the first toast. The bridegroom is to follow, thanking his new father-in law, wife and toasting the wedding party. The Best Man is to make the final toast then initiate the next phase of the event.
