separated friends 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
One of our closest friends will be leaving the country and we're throwing a small party for her. Two other friends, however, are on the process of getting a divorce. We've been friends with both of them before they got together, so inviting one and not inviting the other is really not an option.

What do you think would be the best way to handle this?

Not invite them both? lol... Just kidding.

I think it will be a sign of maturity for all involved - your friends who are getting a divorce and everybody else in your group - if you can go on with the party without having to bring matters about the divorce during the party. After all, the party is for someone who will be leaving soon. So let that person be the star of the event.

You need to make sure they don't sit together or be facing each other on the table. Discuss with your other friends that this is a sensitive period, and jokes regarding the divorce or separated couples must not be made.

Also, make sure everyone enjoys the party so your two friends who are undergoing the divorce process will not be too conscious about the situation.

The most difficult time would be when everything is still fresh. Things will be easier on your next get-together.

In advance I would inform the couple divorcing that you have invited both of them so that neither will be surprised. This will help them mentally prepare for the event. Also it will allow one or both of them to opt out of attending should it be too difficult. I am sure that your guests would understand if this occurred.
