Should older guests be seated closest to the head or end of the dinner table as a sign of respect?

Because my grandmother has a hard time hearing, I always try to place her next to a person that speaks very clear and perhaps louder than some of my other guests.

I don't think it matters much. It's probably alright to have the elders sit at either end, depending on their convenience. Just make sure you have them next to someone with whom they can share nice chats.

If the elderly person is a special guest, you should seat a female guest to the right of the host and a male guest to the left of the hostess.

I have gone as far as to contact my senior aged guests before the party to find out who they would like to sit next to. I think it important to ensure that they feel at ease with other guests.
