Is it alright to serve clear soup in a formal dinner, or should I stick to thick soups? May I also ask for recipes?

Of course, it's perfectly fine.
Here's my favorite clear soup recipe:
1 cup sliced carrot
1/2 cup diced onion
2 minced garlic cloves
3 cups fat-free broth
2 cups diced green cabbage
1/2 cup green beans
1 tbsp tomato paste
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp dried oregano
salt to taste
Saute carrots, onion and garlic. Add the broth. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Simmer for about 20 minutes.
This is very tasty and perfect for those watching their diet as this is low in calorie content. Enjoy it while it's hot.

Clear soups are less filling whereas thick soups are heartier. Therefore your choice of soup may depend on the other items on the menu. Since it is a formal affair, there are some special spoons to use depending on clear or thick soups. A clear soup should be served with a small, round soup spoon. A thicker soup is to be served with a medium round soup spoon.
