Ten of my neighbors want to have a cookout party. How do you assign food items for each neighbor to bring without one spending more than the other? Is it best to collect money from each neighbor then purchase all of the items at once?

I think it would be better to hold a small meeting before working on the party. They can volunteer on the food items they want to bring. Of course, they would know best what their specialties are.

During the meeting, you can open the topic on minimum budget. If they want to go so much beyond that to ensure that they serve the best foods, then just let them be, of course. Just make sure that everybody agrees and adheres to the minimum budget.

I would not suggest collecting money from them. Aside from making sure everybody gives their share on time, you have to do all the budgeting and the preparation by yourself (or with a few others). Best to do the meeting (as suggested by Elly), I guess.
