When are you expected to use a tablecloth at a party? Are there standard guidelines most hostesses use for?

I only use tablecloths when I believe it will add to the ambience of the party. I use tablecloths to create a more elegant dinner party and for special holidays.

In order to cover a not-so-appealing table, I will use a tablecloth. I believe tablecloths these days are used for that reason or as decoration to unite the theme of a party.

I was always told that table clothes for the home originated to protect fine woods and finishes. These days table runners and placemats are equally as acceptable for this purpose. I have been known to use all three in order to compliment my china tableware and or theme.
