My husband and I, as well as some of our friends, have become more aware of the importance of taking care of the environment. I thought how fun it would be to have a “green living” dinner party. Unfortunately, I have only come up with a few games for the party. I cannot seem to come up with ideas for decorations, dress code or specific menu to emphasize my green living theme. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

I would ask your guest to wear whatever they believe would be associated with green living. This in itself will initiate some interesting conversation.

To prevent waste of paper, invitations could be sent electronically or at least use recycled paper. To save energy, your dinner party should be held either outside using natural lighting or indoors with lit candles.

Your menu should consist of all organic foods. These items may cost more but are grown or processed without using harmful, synthetic ingredients. Baked free range chicken, seasoned with a fresh herb, such as rosemary, and lemon would be healthy and delicious. A salad with assorted greens would also be in line with your theme.

I would be sure to serve fair trade tea. This ensures support for the small tea farmers that grow their plants organically. This indicates that you are taking a social and environmental responsibility. You could also include this subject in one of your dinner party games or as a topic of discussion at the table.

Ask each guest to bring one item that he or she believes could be re-used in some way. The group could discuss different ideas for recycling each. I attended a party in which this was included. The different ideas that surfaced were creative and inspiring.
