The Exotic Teapot

With the economy as it is, I am sure that I am not alone in trying to come up with a dinner party theme that is conducive to a reduced budget compared to 2 years ago. I still enjoy entertaining and believe that is more affordable to entertain at home versus dining out with friends. Unlike a restaurant setting, you are not limited to ending conversations after dinner is complete.

A Mexican Theme is inexpensive. Use a Taco Buffet with assorted chopped vegetables and meats. Sangria can be made inexpensively with various low cost wines and fruits. And there are plenty of decorations you can make yourself using candles, bright coloured fabrics and living plants. Plus, guests can easily come up with a costume, with the exception of a sombrerer. And, most enjoy games associated with Mexican traditions.

Have an “in season” theme. Plan your menu with items that are only in-season which will costs less to purchase the ingredients. Ask your guests to select any type of clothing that he or she associates with events held during the month of your party. Decorate with in-season items whether it be flowers, fruits, foliage and make several games that correlate to the month’s entertainment events, harvesting and more.

You could have an outdoor (or even indoor using the fireplace) a “camp out party.” Serve foods that are cooked over a fire such as roasting chestnuts, popcorn, kabobs with pre-cooked meats with fresh vegetables and those sweet s’mores for dessert. Have everyone dress very casual as if camping outdoors. Ask your guests to come prepared to tell their favorite ghost story around the campfire. Serve hot tea, cider and hot buttered rum.

Have a pizza party. You can purchase crust prepackaged and sauces which are far less expensive and time consuming for you. Buy checkered paper tablecloths for decoration. Ask each guest to wear an apron and to bring one of their favorite topping(s) for a pizza. Involve your guests in making a variety of interesting pizzas to bake. Consider serving wine as your only spirited beverage. There will be plenty of time for fun and conversation during preparation and baking.
