light-hearted dinner party theme needed 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Because of the economic turmoil these days, I have decided to have a dinner party in which politics, economy and other controversial topics are not permitted. Instead, I want to come up with a theme, invitations, decorations, dress code and more in which my guests can forget about problems for an evening. I could sure use some creative yet thrifty suggestions on how to make it a success.

That seems a bit of a challenge with the heat brought by the US elections. We see Obama and Biden versus McCain and Palin all over cable news! I was even watching the VP debate and I can't help but comment on certain issues, although I am not actually a voter of the united States!

I really don't know. I think whichever party you throw me into, I'm going to talk about politics. Good thing I'm not invited to your party!

I think your theme very apropos. For if we do not laugh and smile, we cannot think positive thoughts nor take positive action. Consider making your theme be comedians. Ask your guests to come dressed as his or her favorite stand-up comic or actor from a comedy sitcom. One game could be guessing which comic said which famous one liner. Instead of music, play comedy CDs.

I immediately thought of the infamous “smiley face” as a theme. Inform your guests in the invitations of your light hearted intent. Ask them to wear yellow clothes and even paint a smile on their face. Use yellow flowers like daisies and sunflowers for decoration. Prepare a meal and tell your guest that is has “no calories.” Play charades and other games that do not require a lot of thinking.
