superstitious dinner party 3 Months ago
I thought how fun it would be to have a dinner party theme relating to superstitions, good luck ones preferably. Besides having a pot of gold at the front door as guests enter, what other activities could I include? Does anyone know of any good luck foods for the menu, myths that I could use for several games and some suggestions to give to friends on how to dress based on the idea?

The Chinese have perfected the art of good luck traditions.

So why don't you include Chinese New Year Pudding in your menu? This is a sticky pudding that is believed to attract luck and make it stick to the person/s eating it.

The Chinese also believes in the good fortune brought by wearing polka dots and putting mirrors on your doors.

I think you need to choose which traditions you want to make a theme of. There are some practices that are considered lucky by a specific culture and unlucky by another. Mixing them all up in a single party may not be very effective.

Wouldn't the theme depend on the culture and country where you are hosting the party. Some cultures consider owls to be good omen others consider them bad.. Same goes for cats.

Pot of gold would be applicable for almost all cultures

Chinese people consider '8' as lucky, some other cultures have 786, 3 etc. as lucky number.

Add greens such as chard to your menu. People in the U.S. say this is to bring in good fortune. Have your guests eat 12 sweet grapes at midnight to ensure the next month will be a good one, as some Hispanics practice. The Swiss tradition is to drop a dollop of whipped cream on the floor to indicate that there will be a surplus of good wealth. Let fish be your main entrée; the silver scales indicate coins of good luck.

What a fun theme. I think it would be interesting to ask your guests to dress as an object, number or animal that is known in their family to bring good luck. So many cultures have good luck symbols that other cultures may not be aware of. For example, it would be easy to make a horseshoe out of cardboard then pin to your blouse or shirt. Horseshoes hung as the letter "U" are said to bring good luck.
