This actually started in Asia (I think Taiwan, in particular) as a hot black tea beverage added with tapioca balls. Its popularity spread all over the entire Asian continent and moved to other continents, as well. However, as it went place to place, variations were added. Now, we actually refer to iced or blended tea drinks (not the hot tea anymore) when we say bubble tea.
