I was told by my physician that real tea should be not be drank; even decaffeinated still has small traces of caffeine. This can speed up the baby’s heart beat and in pregnant women is slower to metabolize. However, herbal tea, even though not real tea, is completely safe as long as the ingredients are all natural and readily recognizable products that are normally digested.
I have read that pregnant women should not drink chamomile tea because it is from the ragweed plant. This may cause allergies for the unborn. Instead, peppermint tea is recommended as a soothing alternative and is said to aid in morning sickness.
Although herbal tea has been regarded as safe for pregnant women, there are still certain herbs to avoid such as ephedra, mugwort, anise, catnip, chamomile and cohosh. I think the list could actually be longer.
